ABOUT
Oral history is a research methodology in social sciences consisting on compiling meaningful information about the past through recorded spoken interviews.
Oral history interviewing is historical in purposeĀ as it seeks insights into the past from the perspective of the narrator. The information gathered goes beyond a listing of factual events or official historical narratives, and it contributes to situate individual experiences into wider historical and social contexts. The resulting records are curated and archived, becoming a valuable source for documenting individual and collective experiences of scientific ocean drilling.

METHODOLOGY
The project Oral Histories of Scientific Ocean Drilling relies on video-recorded interviews.
We select interviewees from a wide range of fields, institutions, countries, positions and periods, to ensure a comprehensive representation of perspectives through diverse professional careers and backgrounds.
While interviews are primarely conducted in person, we also accept conducting virtual interviews to accomodate to the interviewee’s preferences and geographical locations.
ARCHIVE
The footages are stored for long-term preservation at JAMSTEC (Japan) and are accessible upon request. The spoken interview is transcribed, edited for enhancing clarity and readibility, and shared in this virtual repository.

We welcome experts willing to collaborate with the project and to share their experiences. If you are interested, please don’t heasitate to get in touch with us.
