The transcripts are property of JAMSTEC and are subject to its regulations. Quoting, reproducing, or distributing this transcript, in its entirety or in part, is allowed with due attribution. You can see how to cite the transcripts in each page.

How are the interviews transcribed?

Oral history records are first transcribed literally into its original language (English or Japanese), including pauses, repetitions, redundances and fillers.

The transcripts undergo minor editing for enhancing clarity and redability, before being posted in this repository.

How can I obtain the original footages or audio files of the interviews?

The raw footages and audio-recordings are property of JAMSTEC. The raw material is only available with written permission for non-commercial purposes. Please get in touch with us.

In which locations can the interviews take place?

We primarely conduct interviews in person, both in Japan (where this project is based) and abroad.

Interviews can also take place virtually if geographic or personal circumstances don’t allow to meet in person.

How can I contribute my own oral history to the project?

We welcome experts from all fields of expertise, positions, institutions, countries, and times related to the past and present of scientific ocean drilling.

Are there specific topics or themes you focus on the interviews?

Oral history interviews inquiry for the biography and career of the interviewee in a broad sense, in order to preserve a rich repository of memories that can serve to multiple educational and academic purposes. For this reason, questions usually involve childhood memories and early training, involvement in ocean sciences and scientific ocean drilling, experiences in developing the professional career and international collaborations, etc.

Each interview is customized to the interviewee’s background.

What measures are in place to protect the privacy of interviewees?

Interviewees sign a consent form detailing the uses of the information collected and their rights. They can also express their preferences on the use of personal information. Each interview complies with personal data protection legislation.

Discussions prior to an interview have the purpose of informing the interviewee about the process, and reach mutual agreement on the topics that will be covered.

Interviewees have the oportunity to review and suggest minor corrections, comments or additions to the transcript before it is published.
